A weekend at 'Doodlebug'.

Laura and I finally found time for a weekend away together with the kiddies.
We found this lovely, dog-friendly weekender down near Rye, called 'Doodlebug'.

We were greeted with a lovely house on a hill by the sea, champagne in the fridge, and a bed each for the kiddies.
"Look Mum ! Is that a treat for us in that box ?"
 Hmm, it might be, Mr Darcy. Let me check. Yes, it's full of gourmet dog biscuits.

"Yum. Can we have one now ? It's been a long car ride and I'm hungry."
Yes of course, Mr Darcy. Here we go. One for Daisy...

 

 "Me too, Mum. Me too."

Yes, yes. Slow down. One for you too, Mr Darcy.

Get the mouse !

All right. This is gonna be a long post. So sit back and relax and listen up.

Now, anything that moves or that can be thrown is 'The Mouse.'
Balls, sticks,bugs and even mice - it's always, 'quick, get the mouse, get the mouse !'.

This poor stuffed toy is an Australian Butcherbird with a squeezy thingy inside to make it sing.
Get the mouse Darcy ! Quick ! Quick !
"Throw it, Dad. Throw it !"

"Here it is, Dad. Again ! Again !"

 *galump galump galump*
 

"Dad. Again !"
Ha ha. Sure. Quickkkkk. Get the mouse !

 

*kerthump kerthump kerthump*  "Got it !"

 Daisy. You too. You chase the mouse too.
"Yes Dad."

 

Daisy ! Chase the mouse.

"Well Dad. It looks like hard work."

 

Lazy lump. You need some exercise. 

"But Darcy is doing such a good job of it. Let him do it."

Lazy thing. OK, Mr Darcy, are you ready to do it again ?
"Ready Sir Dad."

One more time. I'll hide around the corner and throw it. Wait for it... wait for it...
"Now Dad. Now. Throw it now !"

One last time. Ready ?
"Ready !"

"Phew. I'm tired now."
Clever thing Mr Darcy.
"I'm tired too, Dad."
What from, Daisy ? All you did was watch.

 

"I offered encouragement, Dad. I'm the support team."
Ah. That'll be it then... Very tiring. You two have a sleep now.

Trust factor - zero !

We've had Mr Darcy over two weeks now and he's settling in nicely. He's a young pup and full of energy.

"Sir Dad, I don't like being on this string. I want to run free !"
Yes, Mr Darcy. That's exactly the problem. You running under a car. Squish !

"But Sir Dad. There's so many interesting things to sniff, and to pee on."
Oh yes, I'm sure. And they're all within five meters of me and this red handle !

"Come on, Daisy. Dad's no fun." *sniff sniff*
"Don't worry, Darcy. You'll get used to it." *sniff sniff*

"Let's check out this tree." *pee pee*
 "Looks good to me." *pee pee*

"Dadddddd. Don't you trust me ?" *pull pull*
As if, Mr Darcy. Trust factor zero, mate.

Maybe in a month or two. Not before.

"Sir Dad. I plead."

Was this you, Mr Darcy ? As if I didn't know anyway.
"I smelled chicken bones, Dad, and I was very hungry"

 I'm not going to smack you, you silly mutt. All I'm going do is clean up the mess, then feed you properly - until your belly is round. It still scares me that I can feel your ribs.
"Sorry, Sir Dad."

That doggie in the window.

I'm off to work on an early shift.
I've kissed the doggies on the nose and said goodbye.

There's Mr Darcy in the window. He jumps up on a chair by the window.

"Goodbye Dad. Hurry home so we can play."
Bye-bye Mr D. See you tonight.

He's there again when I come home. Hello Mr D.
"Hooray. Dad's home. Let's play."

Just let me find my keys.
"Hurry. I need a smooch."

Coming... Coming... Where's my keys !

Chicken for dinner. Call me Dad.

Mr Darcy has only been with us for two weeks, but he is very much at home now.
We rescued him from the RSPCA on the Peninsula.

"I say. What's that Sir ? It sure smells good."
It's roast chicken for our dinner, Mr Darcy. Maybe it's about time you called me Dad.



"Yes Sir Dad. It's an honor."

After all Mr Darcy, I do walk you and comb you.
"True, true."

We have slept together in the same bed. Speaking of which, I think I have one of your fleas.
"Ah. Can I have that one back. I knew I was missing one."

I feed you yummy dinners, and roast chicken, and tasty morsels of cheese.
"Mmmm. Yes you do. I feel that I am growing fatter day by day."

And I kiss your snout when I leave for work...
"Yes Sir Dad. That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Sorry about the tongue up your nose this morning.
That's OK. It probably needed a clean anyway. Just 'Dad', OK ?
"Very good. I shall call you Dad from now on."

Daisy ran into a bike.

*Sigh*. It's been a traumatic month. Monty passing away. Grief. Sadness.
Searching through the Lost Dogs Homes looking for a new hound to rescue. Missing out on poor Prudence. So many sad dogs. Finding Mr Darcy. Mr Darcy escaping. Mr Darcy being found.
This and that. *Sigh*. It's been tough. It's been an emotional roller coaster.

Then what happens ? Daisy trots across the road to our little park and runs straight into a pushbike. *SIGH*. Silly chicken. My heart is jumping all over the place again.
"Sorry Day. It hurts."

Poor thing. You've scraped you eye and hurt your foot.
"Make it better Dad."

Poor Daisy. *kiss kiss* Dad will make it better.
